Storm Damage Sign #1: Missing or Damaged Shingles

After a storm has passed, the first thing you should do is inspect your roof for any missing or damaged shingles. If there are any, they will need to be replaced as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

If you notice any water stains on your ceilings or walls, it’s a sign that your roof has been damaged and is leaking. These should be addressed immediately to prevent further water damage to your home. Water leaks never get better with time, but they can get a lot worse very quickly – especially if more rain, snow or hail comes on the heels of a major storm.

Next, check eaves, gables and vents for any leaks. These are common areas for water to enter the home, so it’s important to check them after a storm (and regularly after that) and repair any damage as soon as possible.

• Eaves are the edges of the roof that extends beyond the side of the house.
• Gables are the triangular shaped area at the end of a sloped roof.
• Vents are openings in the roof that allow air to circulate.

Another area to inspect for storm damage is your gutters and downspouts. If they are damaged, they will need to be repaired or replaced to prevent water from entering your home.

If you notice any warping or buckling in your roofing materials, it’s a sign that your roof has been damaged and needs to be repaired.

Finally, inspect trees near your home for any broken branches that may have fallen on your roof. If there are any, they will need to be removed and the damage repaired as soon as possible.
